Broadly speaking, I am interested in 19th-21st Century poetry and poetics. More specifically, I am concerned with matters of textuality and editorial theory, with genetic criticism, with the relationship between idea and action, with archives as both respositories of unpublished writing and as hermeneutic, and with the pedagogical dimensions of literary production and reception. My works tends increasingly towards collaboration and partnership.
With Steven Yao (Hamilton Colllege) and Mark Byron (University of Sydney), I am editing the Routledge Companion to Ezra Pound (2017); and with Joshua Hoeynck (Case Western) I am finishing an edition of the multi-volume Complete Correspondece of Charles Olson and Robert Creeley, an edition first begun by renowned scholar George Butterick way back in 1980! I've recently edited (with Alex/Rose Cocker) the first-ever schoalrly book about the poet John Wieners called Utter Vulnerability (PULM 2025).
New projects will include work about the relation between revision, nature writing and climage change in the poetry of Marianne Moore; an essay about poetical collection, organisation and representiion of plant material (with special reference to Emily Dickinson and the nealy forgotten artist Sheri Martinelli); something about "sampling" (as technique of hip hop sound production) and the intertextuality of Ezra Pound's Cantos; and a book about Canadian avant-gardes.
Because I fail to recognise a clear distinction the two, there's significant overlap between my "research" and my "creative" outputs. With Ian Heames of Face Press, I'm working on the second edition of a series to be called Manuscripts from Archives. It's a project in which we publish unique, fascinating and hitherto unpublished documents from select archives.
